According to The LA Times Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen will be coaches on the next season of The Ultimate Fighter and will fight on April 27th for the Light Heavyweight Title.
Before UFC 151 was officially cancelled Sonnen offered to step up and fight Jones, but Jones’ camp declined. Then Jones went on record stating that Sonnen doesn’t deserve a title bout yet, and talking his way to the title wouldn’t work. Fans disagreed.
As the voices in favor of the match grew, Dana White said it’s something they’d consider. The fans spoke loudly enough to get the fight made, and I’m sure FX was extremely happy to have the most polarizing figure in MMA on their air every week. Jon Jones being on the air doesn’t hurt ratings either. The show starts filming October 29th and if following the same format as usual will be done filming by December 10th give or take. Which means the guys on the house will be locked up for Thanksgiving, hopefully that doesn’t have an effect weight cuts. Despite a decent showing to start this season, TUF ratings stumbled big time this week falling behind in key demos.
Jones has been unstoppable thus far in his title run, Rashad Evans took him the distance to give him a full fight and Vitor Belfort lasted four rounds and almost finished the fight early with an armbar. Chael Sonnen is coming off a loss to Anderson Silva and is moving up in weight, most likely due to him having to wait a long time for another shot at 185. Both men are great, Sonnen gets over looked because he knows how to hype a fight through his persona. Jones gets hate because he was caught drunk driving with two women who weren’t his wife one night after an accident, and many fans place 100% of the blame for the cancellation of UFC 151.
April 27th should be the culmination to a great season, but at the very least it will be a fight between two top-level wrestlers in the UFC.
